The musical “PUNK” is a band musical that combines the aesthetics of cyberpunk, a science fiction genre, with the rebellious spirit of 1970s punk rock.
Set in a near future where age-reversal technology and artificial intelligence control human life, the musical questions the meaning of humanity and artistic expression through music. The story contrasts the emptiness of the technologically perfected city “Eden” with the imperfect yet authentic lives of those who inhabit the artificial island “Inferno,” capturing the contradictions of contemporary society.
Within the story, four characters form a punk band inspired by the spirit of the 1970s punk movement, embracing the DIY philosophy of “anyone can do it.” Through powerful live band music, the production conveys messages of resistance and solidarity while portraying the enduring essence of humanity and the value of art in a technologically advanced world.
The musical is created by writer and director Yoon Sang-won, known for the musical “Narcissus and Goldmund,” and composer Lee Jeong-Yeon, composer of “Swag Age: Shout Out, Joseon!”
The project was also selected for the 2025 Creative Talent Partnership Program Commercialization Project hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), and its tryout performance received strong audience interest and positive responses.
